Battlefield, Remembrance & Cemetery Tours: American Forces

WW1 Centennial

poppy-battlefields-website-1 We recommend out of all the American cemeteries in Europe - both WW1 and WW2 - that you MUST visit this amazing place of  eternal rest for American fallen. The Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial in France is the largest American cemetery in Europe and is the final resting place of 14,246 Americans from WW1, with most of those buried here losing their lives during the terrible fierce fighting during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive of World War I where the German forces fought - and lost their last ditch battle of WW1.

poppy-battlefields-website-1 It is incredibly beautiful and peaceful, with the sobering and immense array of headstones marching in perfect symmetrical rows upwards and beyond a wide central pool to the chapel that crowns the ridge at the top of the cemetery. In the chapel a lovely bronze screen separates the chapel foyer from the interior, which is decorated with stained-glass windows portraying American unit insignia; and behind the altar proudly stand all the flags of the principal Allied nations.

poppy-battlefields-website-1 On either side of the chapel are memorial walls. One panel of the west wall contains a map of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Inscribed on the remaining panels of both loggias are "Tablets of the Missing" with 954 names, including those from the U.S. expedition to northern Russia in 1918-1919. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified.

poppy-battlefields-website-1 The cemetery is open daily to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except December 25 and January 1. When the cemetery is open to the public, a staff member is on duty in the visitor building to answer questions and escort relatives to grave and memorial sites.

poppy-battlefields-website-1 The cemetery is located east of the village of Romagne-sous-Montfaucon (Meuse) in France, and is 26 miles northwest of Verdun. It can be reached by car from Paris (152 miles) via the A4 toll road. If driving from Verdun travel IS via Consenvoye or Dun-sur-Meuse (26 or 29 miles) following the signs for "American Cemetery.

poppy-battlefields-website-1 We would of course be DELIGHTED to assist you with a tailor made tour to take in this amazing cemetery and any other areas of interest in Europe that you might have. Please contact us if you have any questions or wish to discuss putting together a special trip.
